This Is Overwrought and Completely Ridiculous but I LOVE IT #2012 #masterbeat

Masterbeat's circuit parties are legendary and this year in honor of the end of the world on December 21st, 2012, they've put together a funky video that, not without tongue placed firmly in cheek (I hope!) suggests that the only way to deal with the oncoming apocalypse is to simply dance all night. Actually I can think of worse ways to go out - sitting on the couch by yourself in your underwear wishing you'd done something a little more interesting with your last minutes comes immediately to mind.

A Few Simple Things: Jim Brickman, NYC and Dancing in the Kitchen #jimbrickman #simplethings

Around 2002 I started hearing Jim Brickman's "Simple Things" in various places - on the radio, at a day job, in a store, etc and I'd try to keep humming it as long as I could so that, when I'd go into a music store, which I did at various points throughout a tour I was late in the year, I'd try to get some help identifying the song. No one knew what it was. When I mentioned something about "Simple Things" a guy at a record store harumphed and said "It sounds like some Republican song"

It wasn't until I was in an airport bathroom that I heard it in it's entirety. I spent about three minutes lingering trying to capture as many lyrics as possible in my head before rushing out to the lounge to write them down as quickly as I could. Now I suppose I could record the song on my phone and play it back for friends, technology has come a long way in 9 years. I guess I should be lucky that airport security didn't take me away for loitering in the men's room!

It wasn't until I put this experience out to the 1,000 fans that subscribed to my weekly Journal (you know, back before blogs and Facebook made mass emailing, by and large, a thing of the past) that I got resolution. It turned out that not only did a friend know the song, but was one of the promoters for the artists album. A package in the mail arrived subsequently - a half dozen Jim Brickman CDs with the CD with "Simple Things" on it on top.

The song speaks about enjoying the simple things in life and, at the time, going through one of the many difficult times I've had, it was a comfort and a friend. I traveled the country alone - first on tour for four months and then back to LA to wrap up my life there and then the many months it took me to get settled here in New York in 2003/2004.

It was in this time that I took a friend to a Jim Brickman concert in LA. Brickman, if you don't know, has been hailed "America's Romantic Piano Sensation" and plays the most beautifully romantic music ... and there I was hanging out with my friend Jodie having all sorts of thoughts and feelings about being single at a romantic concert. Still, hearing "Simple Things" performed live was a joy and lifted my spirits up.

Years later, another friend took me to his concert at Birdland here in New York and, at one point I got to meet and take a picture with him. I was totally embarassed as you might be able to tell in the picture above because when I put my arm around him, for some reason, it landed on his ass. I don't know why my hand went there. But it did. I think Jim Brickman is the only star whom I've ever felt up in quite this way.

A year or two later, another friend took me to the next Brickman concert, also at Birdland. He had arranged for me to meet him backstage and it was, as you can imagine, awkward. For some reason I thought it funny to bring up the fact that I had essentially grabbed his ass last time we'd met. Brickman just smiled and mumbled something about obviously not having minded. This of course just made me feel more awkward. (Doesn't this just make you want to rush out and buy us both concert tickets? LOL)

I bring this all up today because I'm doing some housework and I have my iTunes on. I haven't heard "Simple Things" in years and had almost forgotten about it.. when the tune came up I sort of froze. It was suddenly 2003 and my New York adventure was ahead of me, the magic of the music gave energy to my feet and I whirled around the apartment in a joyous dance.

I was struck momentarily that I'd probably never find a partner who thinks this is a good song (I mean, it is pretty sappy) nor would I find someone to dance with me in the kitchen (because, you know, the gays don't dance except on the dance floor) and I found that a little bit of a bummer.

But you know, we don't all have to be partnered up for us to have a good life. I enjoy the things that I get to do because I'm single - like dancing in the kitchen - but there is definitely something a little depressing about not having anyone to turn to and say "remember when we danced in the kitchen?" ... but rather than see these in the negative as I so often have in my long legged life, I'm making a choice to start counting my blessings - the weekly show, my great apartment, living in New York, my health (and I go to a great gym that inspires me to keep on being healthy), my friends both here in town and in far off places and so much more. Sure they're pretty simple things, but they matter. To me, anyway.

The other day at around 5pm I was walking east on 23rd Street and as I crossed, I think Park Ave, and looked uptown. The sunset had colored the clouds pink and they dappled across the fading blue sky. The Chrysler Building's exterior neon lights had been turned on and for a moment, I stood in the crosswalk, fixated on the beauty that is the city I live in.

I suppose the simple things don't add up to much in this glossy world filled with celebrity scandals and crooked politicians, and simple things won't get a cover on a magazine or draw a sold out crowd at an auditorium. They're also not bitchy or catty, they're not cynicl or jaded. and they're not mean.

I suppose that appreciating the sunset and dancing in the kitchen and sitting in my PJs doing a graphic design project (like I did yesterday) aren't much to speak about in this world of ours and finding someone else that appreciates these things as much as I do (and who doesn't find them 'silly') is probably impossible.

But that's OK. It's important to me that I have my head on straight and my priorities right. It won't get me laid, but I suppose that's OK too. :)

Anyway, take a listen to the song - it's taken from one of Jim Brickman's live performances. I prefer the album version but I couldn't find a video for that (only homemade ones with pictures of kids and puppies and things.. posting those made me feel a little invasive). Russia's Move to Make the Gay Disappear

I don't do international politics all that well (we all have areas we're not strong in, that is mine) so I like it when a friend alerts me of something important happening in another place (outside of New York). In this case it's St. Petersberg, Russia - a law that will be voted on next Wednesday November 30th that will make it illegal for any person to write a book, publish an article or speak in public about being gay, lesbian or transgender.

Here in New York, there is a protest planned for Monday night November 28th in front of the Russian consulate to prevent millions of our people from becoming invisible.

As they say, at first they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak up because I was not a trade unionist... and you may say "oh that could never happen here" or "why do I care if LGT's lose their voice in Russia.

Well, if you really have to ask that question, you've not been paying attention the past forty years - silence equals death y'all.. and our rights are never guaranteed. It is an ongoing fight. Sad, but true.

Lost it's Lease, ONE LIFE TO LIVE Canceled For Good #oltl #prospectpark #abc

April 14th, 2011 will always be Black Thursday for soap fans who turned on their computers to discover that ABC had canceled their favorite shows, ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Despite organized protests and letter-writing campaigns, the network, unfazed, announced their replacement shows and went merrily on about their business.

It seemed as though no one associated with running the entertainment industry was remotely interested in providing this kind of entertainment anymore - even if they had to shoot the genre dead in order for it to die. Despite what felt like network dictated edicts to kill off characters and fill the shows up with actors that couldn't act and guns and violence (whatever happened to "Love in the Afternoon"?), the fans stayed. Mostly. But the numbers did tumble. When you decide to tell the exact opposite story that the fans want, why would you expect them to stay? But then, when you want to kill a show, why would you do what the fans want?

Oprah's network, Bravo and other options were floated as saviors of the serials - but ultimately it was cable show producer Prospect Park that rushed in to save the day. The plan was to buy both shows and get them online in January 2012. Fans were thriled and some of the ABC hate faded slightly.

Until this week when the deal, which had been battling unions and guild contracts for the past five months, fell through. The shows are officially dead.

ALL MY CHILDREN fans will never find out who the last person was that David revived nor will we know who was shot (if anyone) in the final seconds of the last episode. Personally I kind of liked the fact that a show with a rich history in murder mysterys should end with one and there's something kind of beautiful that the last person David saved could be anyone (although I'm not convinced that writer Lorraine Broderick knew the identity. If I ever meet her again - I was introduced to her last February at a Valentine's Day party - it's the first thing out of my mouth.. which, you know, probably will ensure that the third time she sees me coming, she'll run the other way! LOL)

As far as ONE LIFE TO LIVE, the show finished taping it's final episodes a week ago and there are some rumors that some actors shot multiple endings to their final scenes, suggesting that the higher ups had an inkling that the deal would fall through and wanted to give themselves some options of how to edit it, just in case. That's the rumor anyway. We'll see.

When Prospect Park was set to continue the show online, they mandated that the show refrain from giving certain characters happy ever afters in order to give them something to pick up with online. Now that the last scene has been shot, now that the deal has fallen through, soap fans are freaking out that our beloved show will end on cliffhangers that will never be resolved. I suppose it's possible that the network could get everyone back together in the next couple weeks for some reshoots but it's unlikely. At this point, we who have been watching this show for decades can only hope that the One Life to Live team gave the editors something to work with that will give us all a satisfying ending.. because it's the only ending we're going to get. There'll be no more lives to live.

Over the next six weeks, the show will reportedly follow the cancelation of the soap within the soap, "Fraternity Row". It was a major storyline in the early 90s and apparently the show will use it as a vehicle to mirror fans' protests and make commentary on what's happened to ONE LIFE TO LIVE. I don't know that I expect a full head on rip on ABC, although it's clear that the network has abandoned it (good luck finding a promo for the show anywhere on the schedule) they still own it so it's unlkely that we'll see anything too caustic, but it'll be amusing to see how far they can go.

In the end, I am grateful that, unlike many shows in prime time that have their own fans and end abruptly without any kind of resolution, these shows have been able to craft some sort of closure. I was never quite convinced that the online jump was going to take place, which is one reason I didn't make a big fuss about it when it was announced. I didn't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I could tell that this was too big a cast, too big a venture, too many hours to produce for a production company used to creating 12 episodes a year of the three or four shows they now produce.

But I'm going to push that thought aside because it doesn't really help to dwell on whatever plans ABC or Prospect Park had and mishandled. What matters now is the end is near and that like with any thing that has captured one's attention for a long time, you want to savor it. Like, when you're reading a book that you just love and you start to dread how few pages are left. While your excitement is racing and you want to devour it as quickly as possible, you simultaneously want to slow down and take each word in and roll it around your mouth to make it last as long as possible. That feeling is delicious.

So for the next six weeks, I'm going to slow down on my ONE LIFE TO LIVE viewings - no more fast forwarding through Ford and Jessica (Lord, give me strength) or Jack (but please no more calling your dad "Scarface") but just honoring every moment and enjoying this last hurrah with old friends.

 

So Tony Danza, Barbara Cook and Michael Feinstein Walked Into a Bar... #feinsteins

What do Tony Danza (star of "Who's the Boss?" with Judith Light) and Barbara Cook have in common? Plenty. They're both cabaret singers and they are both performing at Michael Feinstein's club here in New York City, Feinsteins. I think it's kind of hard to think of the TAXI alum as any kind of singer but I imagine that the show is quite good - I don't know why but I also think - even if it's bad, how can that somehow not be really awesome especially because it is after Tony Danza ("Angell-LAH").

Danza performs five shows next weekend (Thursday December 1st - Saturday December 3rd) and Michael's show with Cook starts Tuesday November 29th and runs for a whole month - til December 30th. You can't beat the price either - $60 with no food or drink minimum for the Feinstein/Cook show. You won't find that coming 'round again (it's the lowest Feinstein's has been since 1999).

The Latest News on the Closing or Rather the Non-Closing of Pieces at 8 Christopher Street

You know, sometimes news comes at me pretty fast and sometimes I react immediately and sometimes, like this upcoming bit of news, hit me, I put it aside and then realized nearly a week later that I'd heard it. I was reminded of it when I was putting together the newsletter tonight that will go out tomorrow morning about tomorrow night's show.

And here it is: Pieces is not closing after all. It turns out that due to the incredible support that the club got over the past few months from the community, the landlord decided to offer Pieces a multi-year lease which means that for the first time in a long time, there will be some investment in the place (I've been told that Pieces had been on a series of several short term leases which has sort of made it difficult to upgrade the sound system, invest in the air conditioning, etc). Me, I'm just hoping for a bigger stage (as are our drag performers and those singers who come, bravely, with backup singers). :)

But Pieces staying in place doesn't mean that the new place we've been working so hard for in midtown (on Tenth Ave between 47th and 48th) won't open, on the contrary, Pieces will have a second location (although I'm told that it won't be called "Pieces").

It's all a bit confusing although it's nice to note that the woman who lives on Gay Street who got up at this summer's CB2 meeting and vomited her bile blaming Pieces for the (used) condoms in her stairwell, the rats, fist fights and garbage that she and the other neighbors used to make certain that we wouldn't get the space on W. 8th Street.. well, they must not be very happy this week because of all that hard spent hate, well, it was all for nothing!

In any event, so that's the state of things down on Christopher at this writing - I'll be sure to keep you up to date if anything more changes in the weeks and months to come. :)
