Last Thursday I had the undeniable pleasure of attending a shockingly small concert by the British talent, Rumer at La Poisson Rouge. I realized as I approached the venue that the last time I'd been there it was like ten years ago and the dance party was called something like "Boys Life". I didn't feel it worked that
well as a dance club but it sure is a pretty great performance space - lots of room for tables and chairs and the sound fills the room perfectly.Unfortunately, due to a prior committment earlier in the evening, I arrived 'late' (prior to the concert but too late for a seat at a table) which ended up not being such a problem really other than a kind of douchebag photographer who kept pressing into me rather than stepping to one side (I guess I'm getting old when I start lamenting the days that the regular patron came first and it was the photographer's duty to work around us rather than the other way around).
Fortunately for me Rumer was so amazing that I completely forgot about everyone and everything else from the get go. Her voice lifted me up and out of the room, allowing my spirit to transcend the room and float above and out into the universe. Her songs and her story seemed to be speaking to me specifically and it was one of those times where you realize that the universe has sort of set you up to be in the right place at the right time to hear what you needed to hear.
It's also kind of rare that I am in public and sort of forget my surroundings and just vibrate out somewhere else (it's only rare at Bingo because I am vividly aware that I'm actually working, rather than simply enjoying).
She somehow combines something quite ethereal and yet still earthbound. And so smooth. Transcendent. I had heard Rumer's music before but, as you all know, hearing any kind of recording and hearing someone in person is sometimes two different things.. but until she's in your neck of the woods, you'll have to settle for devouring her album which you can (and should) get by clicking here. Here's one that I really love -
