This morning I'm posting the pic of the new Pavilion that's been going round and round these past few days. I wouldn't be me if I didn't have some sort of commentary.
First though, let's be honest here, the 'old' Pavilion (RIP) was kind of a big dud, wasn't it? I didn't spend a lot of time there but it always felt like a big blocky box stripped of all possible character. I frequently said that if you beamed into the middle of the dance floor, you wouldn't know you were on Fire Island, the epicenter of gay male activity on the East Coast (I won't go so far as to say the world but it's certainly a legendary touchstone location - like Castro and 18th and Stonewall) or if you were in a club in St. Louis or San Francisco. What marked it as special. Not a thing.
The new proposed structure (artists rendering above) may not be my personal taste (it looks like Jenga and Lincoln Logs fucked and the resulting child was raised by Tim Burton) but it IS distinct and that's a pretty cool thing. It'll be some time before it's done - definitely not this summer, but sometime in 2013 before the summer season starts.
Meanwhile this summer, the lack of dance club (well, in the Pines anyway, theres's still the old workhouse, The Ice Palace, in Cherry Grove, just a quick water taxi ride away or a schlep through the Meatrack) means more house parties and that can only be a good thing anyway for meets and greets and fun times abounding.. let summer 2012 begin!
