Last winter when Boylesque producer Matt Knife approached me about emceeing one of his monthly "Homo Erectus" shows at Stonewall, I was a little skeptical. In the past I'd seen a little burlesque here and there and thought that it was just sort of OK. And then when he told me that he wanted me to piss on canvas as part of a porn star 'piss portrait' series, I thought that he might just be a little crazy. I mean, I've been asked to do a lot of crazy shit in my life - and although this wasn't even in the top ten craziest (only some of those crazy things have been captured on video), it kind of caught me off guard. Who was this guy with the big twirly mustache asking me to urinate on a canvas? LOL
But as he was a costumer for Lucas Entertainment and as I'd watched Vito Gallo piss on a canvas (at the Lucas studio one day when I went to pick up dvdsI was willing to at least hear him out. I mean, Vito seemed to me to be a very straight arrow (relatively speaking) and his involvement kind of lent the project a little bit of gravity.
Within the first hour of seeing his awesome artwork in his home (not just the "piss portraits") and then seeing a DVD of his 2012 Halloween show featuring incredible acts, amazing music and all around awesomeness, I decided right then and there, I think this man is kind of a genius. The broad audacity of Matt's work has made me into a knifer lifer - a fan of his forever. That doesn't happen all that often, but when it does, well, I know better than to let the opportunity slip by. And the fact that he's fun, smart and tells good stories, it's all good good good! :)
So many months later, we've now developed a kind of 'friendmance" and collaborated on a bunch of projects together and I hope that there are more in the future.
On May 1st, Matt was my guest at Bingo along with the singing duo of Fein and Dandee who, just as incredibly, lit up the house with their music including a scary strip involving scissors (that's the scary part) and an accordion (scary, but for entirely different reasons).
If you want a little taste of what Fein and Dandee do, give this link a click and see them in action at a SteamCon (and hopefully we'll have them back later this year).
And this pic to my left is possibly one of my all time favorite photos (but I think it might be a little too racy for Facebook, what do you think?).
The night benefited my dear friend Terry Christopher's Wisconsin AIDS Ride (which, in turn, benefits the AIDS Network) - and I'm thrilled to report that all in all, Terry eventually raised over $10,000 for the Ride (see video below). We've done a number of nights for him in the past, and we will continue in 2014. And by the way, as top fundraiser for the Ride, Terry was given a beautiful new bike, which he's donated to Broadway Cares so that they can auction it off at an upcoming event! Congrats Terry!!
