Now see if Roy Ashburn had subscribed to PinpointsX, he wouldn't be in the mess that he's in. Why? Because PinpointsX is a new ap for your iPhone or iPad Touch or it's even available on the web (for us old school folks who have sausage fingers and find pressing those tiny icons on the iPad really infuriating.. no I wanted PinpointsX, not the Weather!!) that lets you find the nearest sexy place -- or car service for those nights when you really don't need another DUI - to party on with your peeps.
Like, the closest gay bar, or straight bar or strip club or dance club or sexy upscale restaurant where you can take that special male friend on a 'business dinner' so no one will know you're fucking him after you sign important anti-gay legislation. But I digress of course. :)
A couple weeks ago I went to a fabulous art gallery in Soho for a cool media show of the new PinpointsX product. I love this kind of stuff and frankly would rather go to Vegas for the CES convention than the adult stuff because although I'm traditionally a late adapter on many things gadget-oriented, I do love my toys especially when you're looking at something that you know is going to be super big (like 3D television - the next big thing since color. Seriously. Not only are the prices now sorta kinda in the ballpark for buying but it'll be maybe two or three years tops before it's just a thing that people start to get en masse. naturally the trouble is that there isn't a lot of 3D programming which is why if you're an actor or a writer the next few years is going to be one hell of a great ride - because Hollywood will be scrambling to create mountains of entertainment in order to justify to people to ditch their just purchased - relatively speaking - flat screens and opt in for the 3D).
And of course wait til the porn industry gets a new lease on life by recreating the industry with 3D porn. Dominic Ford is the only one doing it now but not for long ......
Anyway, PinpointsX is sorta like Grindr in that it's a way for people to find each other for hook ups. Granted the ap is more pansexual leaning towards straight than strictly gay like the Grindr.
A quick aside, I'm not much into Grindr, partially because I have a boyfriend and in theory I'm not really looking for sex (leave that alone) and also because last year it was like the new meth - where folks were just addicted to it to the exclusion of all else. 'dude, I found someone ten feet away' accompanied by swiveling heads and desperate furtive looks to where 'ten feet away' is (it's New York so 'ten feet away' could be in a completely different business than the one we're in).
BTW when I approached the Grindr guys about cross promoting with Bingo, they sent me their promo package where it would cost me $400 to promote them. Uhm WHAT? Yeah, those Grindr parties that you see around town, they cost the promoter $400 to put on. And that's just to get the Grindr logo on the thing. I think it's a fun site but honey, nothing's that fun. And by the way that is one great GREAT scam - let's charge people to promote our business. Brilliant. And that people actually do it is hilarious!! My dad used to say that you could see those kinds of people coming a mile away.
Anyway, PinpointsX has really great graphics and a detailed map of the city you're in (it looks like Google Maps) dotted with icons for various erotic type of activities. The first step is to sign up on their website (maybe you can do it on your iPhone but geez, sitting at a real keyboard is just plain easier I think) and then it takes you through the steps pretty easily. It's a gay and straight site and I was impressed with how savvy the creators of the menus are giving a wide array of options - looking for escorts or groups or one on one.
If you're a business or a professional you can list on the site too. With one touch on the screen, the name of your business - restaurant, comedy club (Comix is on PinpointsX), massage place, dance club, etc, - will pop up and will lead to another screen with full details - location, website, phone number and so forth. And geez, I even found an all male strip club on there that I never knew existed - located on W. 28th Street. Gotta check THAT out soon!
Naturally this is one of those things that in the early stages can feel a little like 'where is everybody?" but it's an investment over time and as more and more people, straight and gay, join in, your options will expand rapidly.
