Every year I like to highlight what I think are the best/most fun/cheapest things to do to express Pride - I mean besides sitting in a hotel and ordering guys off Manhunt and Rentboy. That's certainly one option but there's so much more to New York (and life!) than this and hope you all take advantage of all the fabulous events coming up!
Pride has already started in the New York area but I hear the Brooklyn Pride fest is a lot of fun so I'm checking it out this year (Saturday June 12th). The day starts out with a Fun Run (honestly is there really a lot of fun in running other than if you're running to KFC before they close?) at 8am, followed by an Multicultural Festival from 11am to 6pm - and in addition to the festival itself, there is a kids only space and something called The Amazing Race which features a Scavenger Hunt (OK so it sounds dorky but is probably a lot of fun). Then, the big parade is Saturday NIGHT - which is the only Pride parade to take place at night that I know of. Usually a nighttime Pride parade means the trail of guys walking up and down 8th Ave. between 14th and 23rd so this will be a great change! Naturally this all takes place at Prospect Park at Bartel-Pritchard Circle in Brooklyn. Naturally, it's Pride so it's free (although if you have $25, the Brooklyn Pride website is soliciting donations. Seriously that's like a (cheap) drink at Therapy).
On Sunday June 13th (yeah, I know it's the Tony's which really ought to be the official kick off to Pride) those rascally golden girls are at it again with the launch of a new run of "Thank You For Being a Friend" which runs Sundays til August
1st at 8pm at the Kraine Theatre (85 W. 4th Street at 2nd Ave.) with an all new cast. I'm sure there will be at least one joke about Betty White having to watch her back (or do we think that it's too soon for that?). Tickets are $20.
And on Monday, the New York Theatre Workshop will present a fabulous Pride themed fundraiser, called Standing on Ceremony, The Gay Marriage Plays featuring a collection of short plays written for marriage equality by Americas Leading Playwrights featuring celebrity appearance by people like Kathy Najimy, BD Wong, Amy Brenneman and more. So this isn't a cheapie - tix start at $75 and you can get yours by calling 646 957 9547 or clicking here but be sure to use promo code SOCNYTW.
More later as I make my way through the Pride season. As always send your suggestions to me at willclarkworld at gmail dot com!
