Like everyone else here in the city, last night I could not contain my joy at the passing of Marriage Equality at long last. We shoulda been first, we were sixth, I'll take that.
And like hundreds (thousands?) of others I went out onto the streets for a couple hours to dance, celebrate and revel in the joyousness of The Moment, a moment that many of us fought, worked and struggled so hard for for so many years.
Truly in my lifetime I didn't think I would actually ever live in a world where same sex couples could get married anywhere... but here it is and perhaps this is the start of another passages around the country. There is still a long and hard road ahead of us - it took how long and how much effort to get this passed in progressive New York.. I wonder will this ever happen in places like Arizona, Alabama, Texas, Florida? I used to thnk it was unlikely but after what has happened in my lifetime, I take nothing for granted anymore. The activists in those states care just as deeply about this as we do - and after the glow wears off, it will be up to us here in New York to champion for those other 44 states that are still without Marriage Equality. Let's not forget that there's still work to be done (but that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the moment now! LOL)
Below is Gov. Cuomo's speech after signing it last night.. it brought tears to my eyes and I hope you're similarly moved.
After that, Sen Grisant's stirring speech last night that I hope will pave the way for some of that hopey changey stuff in the hearts of other GOPs around the country. Yes Sarah, this is what hopey changey looks like - and it's pretty damn awesome.
