Few things in life are as bittersweet as New Year's Eve Day. You've spent the year trying to make progress in your life - and it's at this point that you might realize, you didn't quite get where you wanted to be by the end of the year. I occasionally go to Unity New York on Sunday mornings and a year ago we did an excercise as part of the service where we'd write a letter to ourselves to be read on January 1st, 2012.
At this writing, I haven't received the letter, but I know that I aimed a little too high in my goals. But I'm not disappointed, because I remember where I aimed, and on nearly every front, I at least made some progress. So I didn't get the dream job yet. But I got a part time one in a field I never dreamed I'd work ... and while it's kind of been quiet the past few weeks, I'm pretty confident that it will ramp up in the weeks to come.
While I'm melancholy about saying goodbye to the old year -- even though some of it was kind of great, some of it was kind of awful -- I have forgiven myself and have already moved on to planning what steps I can take to make 2012 kick ass.
If you're still holding on to the junk you know you ought to let go of - do it now and do it completely. There is no 2011 left and you might as well forgive yourself and move forward. Tomorrow truly is a better day and it really is the first day of the rest of your life.
This song by Annie Lennox always hits me hard - I hate goodbyes but there can be something cathartic in thinking about those people and those times we have lost. I don't think living in the past is smart or healthy, but I do think it is smart and healthy to remember the past, honor it and savor it.. but then let it go.
So think of a special someone or some time and project your own images into Annie's video and enjoy and savor.. and then let go and move forward. The world is just waiting for all of us to start fresh tonight at 12 midnight. Join us. :)
PS This is my last post of the day, new posts that I've pre-written will show up tomorrow and then we'll be back to normal starting on Monday January 2nd.
More Hunk O The Day, Bingo pics and the always "more". :)
Stay safe and remember if you feel as though you can't manage the subways because of too much celebrating and need to get home tonight, call on our friends at Right Rides they'll hook you up (and then tomorrow you'll make a nice donation to them for making your life easier.. and perhaps even saving your life!) :)

Annie Lennox singing Cole Porter for Derek Jarman.
And it's even better in the movie, because Steven Waddington and Andrew Tiernan are so inhumanly pretty together.
