Good morning peeps!
I was supposed to be on a plane this morning flying Jet Blue to NOLA for Decadence, but because of the weather situation there all flights today were cancelled. Thankfully some awesome res agent there managed to grab me a seat even though, when I first called, all the flights Friday and Saturday were already sold out. Persistence - and being nice - can go a long long way in this world - don't let anyone tell you differently. (That's for you cynics out there that think that there are no nice people left and that miracles don't happen).
Speaking of miracles, Tuesday afternoon, the ex BF and I stopped by a chocolate shop in Rockefeller Center on our way back from visiting his dad in the hospital (he's getting his knee replaced). We'd planned on taking a cab from the hospital back to Times Sq (where he works) but a fire truck got in the way, holding up traffic and we decided to walk the last few blocks. I love Rock Center and so I suggested we walk through on our way. When he suggested making a stop, I said yes, we both love their chocolate truffles (I think there may be a Julia Child song in there somewhere ... btw I can't get the Melodysheep piece out of my head, but I'm not sure I want to either.. what a great great tribute to an amazing woman!)
I was standing around kind of going blank a little and he called me over to the display case to point out a cake that read "(My name) Will you Marry Me?" I instantly looked at him with a "did you do this?" expression on my face and he replied, 'no I swear!" We had a good laugh about it but it was unsettling. Then as he bought the truffles, the young lady at the counter boxed up the cake (which looked very expensive - and as I have been working part time as a wedding planner, I know how much these things are) and gave it to us. Free. Seriously.
I mention this only because it's easy to get cynical these days especially in light of the intense showdown of political views being thrown about on both sides during this election season. While I feel my side, the liberal, progressive side, is right, I have to concede that however misguided, racist, homophobic, sexist, crazy and just plain mean I find the GOPeabaggers to be, they believe themselves to be right as well. I think it's a fairy tale that it's different now than it was in the past and that campaigns in the past were somehow more gentlemanly. I think it's always been like this - mudslinging and yellow journalism are not a 21st century invention.
But once in awhile - well, maybe more often than we notice given our preoccupation with social media, our phones and living in the big city- little miracles happen. Call me a crazy optimist. Call me filled with "hopeless romantic drivel" But I do see it on a regular basis even if sometimes in my rushaday world, I ignore it. And it's one of those life lessons to focus on the miracles and not the disasters. As I said on
Facebook yesterday, I can dwell on the fact that I have one less day to work/drink or I can focus on the opportunity for my liver to heal from the last time I was out and about LOL :) <wink> Besides, now this gives us an opportunity to create some sort of "I'm Still Fucked UP" type party at the Phoenix on Monday morning. Stay tuned for deets!
So, the Decadence weekend starts today (check out the events at the New Orleans Phoenix) but mostly it'll start happening in earnest tomorrow when everyone flies in to make it the annual party that we all know and love. My friend Candy Samples is going to be performing Sunday morning and to celebrate that, she's released her newest video, "Bear Season" featuring various New York bears. It's sorta a twisted version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" but sexier.. and uhm with a drag queen. :) The song is great, the editing fabulous and there's lots of fun, interesting things happening throughout.. a job well done!
