Good afternoon peeps!
Many years ago, back in 2008, when our original venue, the 9th Ave. Bistro closed for good (and became a Dunkin Donuts) I had a few offers to move the show to various bars around town. I followed up on all
the possibilities - like Chandler's girlfriends, there always seemed to be something wrong with them.. the layout of the place was weird, or the management was creepy or, in one case, the venue wanted to move us to another night.
As I have a marketing/promotions background, and 20 years experience producing events, I considred the new venue/new night thing but ultimately refused as I felt that I could change the location but I couldn't change the night. Too much change makes people tune out.
So we found Pieces and continued our Wednesday night slot. Fast forward to a year ago - in 2012. It was time to make another change and the best (not the only, but best) offer I got was to go to the Ritz. They wanted us to go to Thursdays at 7pm. A tiny voice inside of me reminded me of my earlier pronouncement - that I could change one thing about the event, but not everything. But I didn't listen....
So, it's with a heavy heart that I had to come to grips with the fact that the new place wasn't really working out.
No blame, no shame, just wasn't a match. Life goes on and everyone on both sides is que sara sara. Had I been true to my own marketing ideals, I wouldn't have chosen to go to Thursdays at 7pm. But water under the bridge and all that.
When it came time to make the move, it happened in relatively short order. Uncle Charlies hired me and the show on the spot and not only did I get a Wednesday slot again but we're back to our original pre-Pieces time slot (9pm to 11pm) AND I'm thrilled that I am getting to work with our Bistro bartender, Manny, again.
So tonight from 9pm to 11pm, we'll be doing a special "preview" night of Bingo at Uncle Charlies. My guest is singer Terry Christopher and as he was my final guest at the Bistro, it's kinda fitting. AB will be with us of course and we'll play four rounds of Bingo and chat a lot (don't we always?).
NEXT week is our official/advertised opening and will feature drag queen Robusta Capp. The week after that, February 20th, will be our 8th anniversary show and I'll feature a nice little lineup of folks.
I hope I'll get to see you all there - and if you're not able to make it in person, please consider making a donation to our first Bingo beneficiary, the fine fine folks at the Gay/Lesbian Anti Violence Project.
More tomorrow and throughout the weekend, so keep coming back to the Will Clark World blog!
