I suppose my life is a kind of contradiction - the set's been on NFL football on all day long and am looking forward to the fourth game of the Series tonight (what was wrong with the Sox last night?) but my pop culture side still rears his head from time to time... and so I'm on edge waiting for tomorrow afternoon's General Hospital esp since Ilene Kristen will be on as (mild spoiler alert) Delia from Ryan's Hope as Ava Jerome's mother. Aside from the continuity problems this presents and a slightly questionable age difference between the actresses, seeing Ilene on my set again at least for a couple days this week will be a highlight of an already incredible run: Robin escapes Jerry Jacks? I'm there. Douche-bag Morgan (who's biggest asset is his ability to look incredible mostly naked) is siding with his mob dad's biggest rival? Awesome. And lots of Diane and little airtime for the drippy teen storyline that was DOA when the show started it a few months ago. "Cartini" knows how to cut it's losses. And did I mention that there are lots of shirtless guys? This is what happens when your head writer and executive producer are out gay men who know what their audience wants to see. Straight guys must be bummed that there's not as much tit and ass as there has been in years past. No, really, I've met them, there are straight guys who watch soaps. They live next door to the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot. :) (Above: Ilene joins me as a guest at Bingo in April 2010).
But my cigar-filled, bourbon swilling home life doesnt end with a happy devotion to CBS and Fox sports or to keeping up with Port Charles, no I recently discovered a bizarre comic book that I'm instantly hooked on - AfterLife with Archie, an ongoing title devoted to an alternate universe where the Riverdale gang turns into zombies. I grew up reading Superman, Batman, The Flash but over the years, there were a lot of reboots and relaunches and that kind of killed my enthusiasm for the genre. But as I have a lot of friends who either work directly in the comic book industry or are lifelong fans (one friend's super hero costumes are astounding and he models them at various cons) I get a periphreal awareness of what's new through them. And when I heard about AfterLife with Archie, I knew I had to check it out. The story is by Harvey Award-winning writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Carrie, Archie meets Glee) and Eisner-winning artist Francesco Francavilla (Batman, Black Beetle. In case you needed any more reason, the press on the book describes it as the "Arch-pocalypse". Need I say more? There's a second printing of the first issue coming out on November 6th and the second issue goes on sale on November 20.
